If you are an Australian professional and looking to connect with other professionals, either nationally or internationally, it looks like LinkedIn is your best bet so far.

LinkedIn:

• Global: 200,000,000 as at last LinkedIn announcement 9 January 2013, as at today’s date (26 August 2013) LinkedIn’s About Us page states “Welcome to LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network with 225 million members in over 200 countries and territories around the globe.” [my bolding]
• Australia: 4,000,000 as at BRW article 4 million members and counting: LinkedIn Australia finds connections get you places (14 March 2013). As at today’s date (26 August) if I search for 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree connections and group members located in Australia there are 4,362,553 results returned

Viadeo.com:

• Global: >50,000,000, as at today’s date (26 August 2013) site states: “The Viadeo Group owns and operates professional social networks around the world with a total membership base of over 50 million professionals.”[my bolding]
• Australia: 329 members based on a search for members located in Australia as at today’s date (26 August 2013)

Xing.com (Primarily aimed at German-speaking World):

• Global: 6,000,000 (stated in Xing’s 2012 Annual Report)

Sites like linkme.com.au and wisestep.com and even seek.com.au have profile elements, but appear to be more job search sites.
